Bert & May, a tile specialist, opened The Mix this week—a collaborative showroom in East London’s Bethnal Green. It pulls together British design brands, including a terrazzo collection from their partnership with Marrakech-based Popham Design. KBN covered the launch, noting how the space displays Bert & May’s handmade and reclaimed tiles alongside the new collab.

The Mix Setup

The showroom sits in a canal-side warehouse on Vyner Street, Bert & May’s original spot. Founder Lee Thornley spent a year on it to counter tough retail times, like Fired Earth going bust recently. “Why are we not working together?” Thornley said at the opening, per KBN. He wants it to draw architects, designers, and retail customers away from online buys by showing full home setups.

No direct sales here—brands have concessions with QR codes for details. Farrow & Ball’s Joa Studholme made a custom color palette for the whole place.

Brands and Features

The Mix has immersive sets from these partners:

  • Popham Design: terrazzo collection with Bert & May
  • Pluck: pared-back kitchens in woods and color
  • Armac Martin: hardware like a haberdashery setup
  • Curiousa: hand-blown glass lights, new Pastello bathroom pieces
  • The Water Monopoly: Rockwell Bath in “Conch” shade
  • Thomas Crapper & Co: colorful, personalizable cisterns
  • Others like Whitebirk Sink Company and Kréte basins

Armac Martin’s Melissa McGrail called it low-risk exposure for London designers. Pluck’s Leila Touwen said it shows how their stuff fits together.

Plans Ahead

Thornley measures success by customer footfall and designer use. Next up: Mix #2 in South London by March 2026, then Manchester in September. Each will tweak brands for local tastes, plus events like supper clubs.
